What is Recruitment? Recruitment is the time when sororities seek and recruit new members. The recruitment events are at different times for each chapter. Recruitment is a time when students have an opportunity to visit the sororities on campus and see what each has to offer. If I go through Recruitment, do I have to join? No. Recruitment is a time to see what Greek life can offer you. Going through Recruitment and its functions does not commit you to joining. What is Bid Night? Bid Night is when women are invited to join a sorority. A bid is the actual invitation to join. Once a potential new member has signed a bid, that student is agreeing to associate themselves with that sorority for one year. They can then either begin the new member process with the sorority, or begin education with the next new member class. Do Greek organizations take up a lot of time? Fraternity/Sorority membership requires anywhere from 2 to 8 hours a week. Whether it be a community service project, planning an event, or regular weekly meetings, Greek members have learned to manage their time wisely with other commitments such as schoolwork, a job, and significant others. How expensive is joining a sorority? Sorority dues vary with each chapter. ASA dues at RIT are about $140 per quarter.
What if I decide I don't want to join a sorority? There is no obligation to join a sorority just because you participate in recruitment events. You are encouraged to participate as it gives you an excellent opportunity to learn about sorority life. If you decide not to join at this time, it will not be held against you. If you change your mind later, contact the sorority you are interested in and inquire about continuous open bidding opportunities. Who else can I ask questions of? If you have any questions about Alpha Sigma Alpha or Greek life at RIT, send an IM to ASAatRIT to chat with a sister, or send an e-mail to one of our officers on the Contact page.
